How to decide between Flat, Satin, and Semi-Gloss Interior Paint

Whether painting a new room or simply working on a home improvement project, getting your interior paint right requires some decision points. After deciding the color of the paint, you also have to consider the paint's finish carefully to ensure it doesn't just match your interior design and furniture; but also the purpose of the area you are having painted.
Getting your interior paint right is crucial for creating the right atmosphere in the area. So, it pays to know how to decide between flat, satin, or semi-gloss interior paints for specific purposes.

What's The Difference?

•    Flat Paint. As the name implies, flat paint is flat and straightforward, so it is ideal for creating a comfortable atmosphere. It is also perfect for hiding flaws, cracks, bumps, and blemishes, which is why buildings use them a lot. However, flat paints can look dull. They are also not washable. So, people use flat paint more often for ceilings, which you don’t need to wash. A matte finish, which is slightly more washable and shinier than a flat paint, can be a great alternative to a flat if you are willing to pay a little extra.

•    Satin Paint. Satin paint is used for ceilings and trims when you need to wash them because this type of interior paint finish is smoother and holds up to cleaning and light scrubbing.

•    Semi-gloss Paint. Semi-gloss paints are also great for trims and are ideal for drawing people’s eyes to specific interior elements. They are shiny and have a bit more sheen than satin paints. However, you may not want to use them for painting walls of a room where people work because they can make it harder for people to focus. Instead, use them in high-traffic and high-moisture areas because they are easy to clean and resistant to humidity.

Different paints have different purposes, so choose a paint depending on the part you’re painting or your specific need for the area. For example, aside from the above types, there are special paints with mildewcide, which you can use to prevent mildew build-up in bathrooms.
